  1. This is the Dec '93 NetPBM suite of image manipulation and conversion
  2. utilities for the Atari ST, TT, and Falcon030.
  3.  
  4. These were built using GNU C 2.5.8 and the MiNTlibs pl.44.

  9. To use NetPBM, you will need:
  10.  
  11.  * MiNT (v 0.98 or higher, preferably 1.04 or the current version)
  12.  
  13.  * a minix partition large enough to store all of the files (give yourself
  14.    about 6M of free space for the binaries)
  15.  
  16.  * all of the files:
  17.       - NetPBM-man.tar.gz (the manual pages)
  18.       - NetPBM-doc.tar.gz (supplementary documentation, including a
  19.                           LaTeX version of the manual pages)
  20.       - NetPBM-lib.tar.gz (GNU C libraries and header files; only if you
  21.                           plan to compile programs using NetPBM
  22.                           functions and libraries)
  23.       - NetPBM-pbm.tar.gz (Portable Bitmap binaries)
  24.       - NetPBM-pgm.tar.gz (Portable Greymap binaries)
  25.       - NetPBM-ppm.tar.gz (Portable Pixmap binaries)
  26.       - NetPBM-pnm.tar.gz (Portable Anymay binaries)

  28.       If you have a TT or Falcon, you might want to get these instead:
  29.       - NetPBM-pbm020.tar.gz (68020 and up Portable Bitmap binaries)
  30.       - NetPBM-pgm020.tar.gz (68020 and up Portable Greymap binaries)
  31.       - NetPBM-ppm020.tar.gz (68020 and up Portable Pixmap binaries)
  32.       - NetPBM-pnm020.tar.gz (68020 and up Portable Anymap binaries)

  34.  * tar and GNU zip (gzip) to unpack the files
  35.  
  36.  * a decent shell in /bin/sh (some of the utilities are shell scripts)

  38. To install NetPBM:
  39.  
  40. 1) Make a directory on a minix partition for NetPBM, and cd into it;
  41.    this is optional if, for example, you already have bin and man
  42.    directories on your minix partition that you want to unpack the stuff
  43.    into.
  44.  
  45. 2) Unpack each of the files with the command:
  46.  
  47.         gzip -d -c filename.tar.gz | tar -xovf -
  48.  
  49. 3) Add the new bin directory to your PATH environment variable, and add
  50.    the new man directory to your MANPATH environment variable (if your
  51.    man utilities support MANPATH).
  52.  
  53. Other Important Things
  54.  
  55. * You'll probably need to set the UNIXMODE environment variable to b (or
  56.   add b to your current UNIXMODE environment variable, if you've got
  57.   one).
  58.  
  59. * These are VERY SLOW on an ST.
  60.  
  61. * These would be much smaller and easier on RAM if we had shared
  62.   libraries.
  63.  
  64. * The binaries aren't shareable.  Why?  Well, there isn't a sharable
  65.   version of the math library (pml.olb), and several of the programs
  66.   need math support.
